Canadian Snowbirds to Perform at Scott AFB
BELLEVILLE, IL, (SWI-News.com) - The Canadian Snowbirds aerial demonstration team is set to fly in from the north country, September 19 - 20, 2009 to headline Scott Air Force Base's Airshow 2009 and will perform more than 50 different formations and maneuvers in their Canadair CT-114 Tutor aircraft.
The Canadian Snowbirds and Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team will be among numerous aerial performances and static display aircraft planned for the annual event, which is free and open to the public.
"We are excited to have the Canadian Snowbirds and the Army's Golden Knights perform at this year's show," said Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th Airlift Wing commander. "It's going to be a great show, and we invite the entire St. Louis Metropolitan area to join us. Along with seeing these great performers, the airshow allows us the opportunity to show you the Air Force -- up close and personal."
To commemorate the Centennial of Flight, the Snowbirds will be conducting 100 flybys of 100 Canadian towns or cities during the course of their show season, and will perform in 65 airshows this year. The Army's Golden Knights travel all over the country performing aerial demonstrations at airshows and special events in support of Army recruiting goals.
The air show is free and open to the public. Parking is also free. The Shiloh & Belleville gates will be open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. each day. Visitors can also take the Metrolink to the Shiloh-Scott station where buses will take you to the Air Show area of the base. Normal Metrolink and bus fees apply. Scott Air Force Base
During World War I, pilots trained on a small field in the Shiloh Valley Township near Belleville, Illinois. Local businesses worked with the Federal Government to formally develop 624 acres as an aviation field and in 1917, "Scott Field", named after Corporal Frank S. Scott, officially opened for formal flying instruction. In 1922, the Air Service Balloon and Airship School opened. Soon after, an airship hanger, containing more than 18 million cubic feet, was constructed.
Today, Scott Air Force Base is home to the U.S. Transportation Command which is comprised of the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, the Army's Military Traffic Management Command and the Navy's Military Sealift Command. Additional commands include the Air Force Command, Control, Communications and Computer Agency and the Air Weather Service.
Scott's 375th Airlift wing, which manages the domestic aeromedical evacuation system, is supported by the Air Force Reserve's 932nd Aeromedical Airlift Group.
Nearly 6,500 military and 3,500 civilians work at Scott Air Force Base. The complex, which occupies almost 4,000 acres with 900 buildings, has grown into a small town with its own police and fire departments, hospital, department store, grocery store, movie theater, restaurants and a motel for visitors. There are homes, duplexes and mobile homes for more than 1,700 families and dormitory rooms for 600 unmarried service members.
