EAST ST. LOUIS (July 3) - Six years after opening, the Casino Queen on the East St. Louis riverfront celebrated Independence Day and the progress of East St. Louis with a topping-off ceremony, hosted by East St. Louis Mayor Debra Powell.

Craig Travers, General Manager of Casino Queen, enthusiastically noted that the new $13 million, 150-room Crown Hotel was just one element in their $40 million master plan. "You will be witnessing the transformation of a riverboat casino operation to a complete entertainment and lodging destination in the new millennium," Travers said as he pointed out the metro East St. Louis area had all the necessary factors to grow a business.

Many people enjoying the evening ceremony before the fireworks show, had taken part in the ground breaking seven months earlier. "This past week the last plank was set for the seventh floor, signifying the topping-off of this structure," said Travers. The facility, featuring a Frank Lloyd Wright style for the interiors, will offer first class accommodations, including seven deluxe theme suites, banquet rooms, an indoor swimming pool and modern conference center.

"We hope to be putting people in these rooms the day after Christmas and we hope to see many of you staying here for the millennium celebration here on the riverfront," Travers said. The Casino Queen has welcomed more than 16.5 million visitors since it opening in June 1993 and has ranked as one of the most popular destinations in the St. Louis area.

Before the official christening of the Crown Hotel at the Casino Queen, Mayor Debra Powell stated that the Independence Weekend was a fitting time to recognize that it was also the beginning of independence for the community of East St. Louis. "We move towards that end to take our independent position as a regional city in this region. As the City of East St. Louis grows, the metro citizens in this area will grow and the region will grow."
