Discovery Health Channel's Documentary on Asthma Features Jackie Joyner Kersee
Louis Gossett, Jr.
Louis Gossett, Jr. (Newstream)
EAST ST. LOUIS, (Newstream), February 12, 2003 - Louis Gossett, Jr. will host Asthma: Fighting To Breathe, a one-hour special that gives viewers a closer look at asthma and how it adversely affects Black and Latino populations. Olympic gold medallist Jackie Joyner Kersee and Grammy Award-winning artist, Coolio, reveal their personal struggles with this chronic disease.

Kersee is considered by many to be the best female athlete ever, but winning gold medals has not been her biggest challenge - it has been living with asthma. Retired after the 1996 Olympic games, this exceptional athlete has her asthma under control and now spends her time and money providing support for other young African-American boys and girls.

Coolio is one of the few musical artists who has spoken openly about his bouts with asthma. He has vivid memories of passing out, of not being able to breath and sadly, being so broke that his telephone was cut off so he could not even call for help

The program will air on the Discovery Health Channel, Saturday, February 22, at 9 PM (ET).

Annual Black Literary Heritage Symposium to Present 'Linkages'
EAST ST. LOUIS, (SWI-News.com), February 12, 2003 - The Eugene B. Redmond Writers Club will present "Linkages: Black History & Black Literature," Tuesday, February 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville's East St. Louis Campus.

'Linkages' will feature a cross-gender, intergenerational cast of poets and writers - also known as the Soular Systems Ensemble. Curtis Lyle, Sheryl Johnson, Roscoe Crenshaw, Christienne Hinz, Bala Baptiste, Sandra English, Bruce Petty, Charlois Lumpkin, and Eugene B. Redmond.

Many of the tributes will take the form of the "kwansaba," a seven-line poem of seven words per-line, invented by the writers club in the mid-1990s. The free, family-friendly event is co-produced by the National Black Writers Conference of Medger Evers College, City University of New York. For more information, call 618-650-3991.
