Miles 2001 Festival Draws Thousands of Jazz Fans ![]() Jazz trumpeter Clark Terry's memorable performance was cut short by rain during the jazz tribute, May 26, to Miles Davis held at the Casino Queen, located on the East St. Louis Riverfront. EAST ST. LOUIS, IL, (SWI-News.com), May 20, 2001 - Despite threatening skies and occasional downpours, thousands of jazz fans gathered, May 26, to enjoy listening to local, regional and nationally known jazz musicians pay tribute to Miles Davis in a free outdoor concert at the Casino Queen on the East St. Louis Riverfront. Feature The Forum for Contemporary Art will host "Miles Draws: The Art of Miles Davis," an exhibition of Davis' drawings and paintings, curated by Mel Watkin, thru July 28. On June 1, the Forum will feature "A Gallery Talk About Miles Davis", at 7:00 p.m., led by Missouri Historical Society curator Benjamin Cawthra. "An Evening with Writer and Poet Quincy Troupe" will feature the biographer of Miles Davis, June 22, at 8:00 p.m., at the Forum, located at 3540 Washington Ave., St. Louis. The Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and Humanities is planning a special "The World View of Katherine Dunham," from June 15 - July 1. The two-week intensive training seminar, focusing on movement, theory and technique for adults and children will take place at the East St. Louis Community College. Details are still forthcoming. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) - The Miles: A Miles Davis Retrospective, at the Missouri History Museum, on display to February 2002, features 100 selections of music, digital audio interviews, paintings, records, jackets, music sheets, artifacts, and photographs that analyze the career of the man who made The Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and other great recordings. The exhibition examines the St. Louis and East St. Louis musical cultures of Davis' youth, his astounding professional career, his artistic achievements, and the cultural impact of his art and legacy.
